When it comes to girl bosses, there are plenty! When it comes to books, there are an infinite amount of them. Thankfully, there are many stories being published today with endless amounts of advice and inspiration for us to digest and take with us on our own business ventures.

When it comes to my choices, I want to give you some uncommon picks. Because, yes, we love Sophia Amorso and Ariana Huffington, don't get us wrong, but there are plenty of girl bosses out there that are worth reading and learning from this New Year! Let’s introduce (or re-introduce) them to you with my personal favorite and uncommon girl boss books to inspire you this year.

The Year of Yes- Shonda Rhimes

The queen of “Thank God Its Thursday” has her own book. We all know her writing as recognizable and impactful (just think about those great Kerry Washington one-liners). This book is no different.

Stuck in a rut, Shonda commits to saying yes for a year. Yes, to the scary, unfamiliar and uncomfortable to reconnect with her passion, “laying down track” (gotta read it to find out what that means) and finding more time to be with her family.

As expected, she tells us this story in the quick-witted, humorous and real fashion she always serves us with. I’d recommend this book to just about anyone in any phase of girl bossdom.

I’ll Drink To That- Betty Halbreich

I’ll Drink To That is a memoir by Betty Halbreich, Bergdorf’s personal shopper extraordinaire. Her clients include Meryl Streep and past work includes collaborating with Patricia Field’s for Sex and The City. Impressive, right?

So is her story and how she got to be a staple at Bergdorf’s. We follow her from "From childhood to child bride to a childish mother,” to the independent icon she is today. This book was a pleasure to read! Betty left me in stitches while reminding me to carve my own path to success.

Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Food Critique in Disguise- Ruth Reichl

With the name like Garlic and Sapphires, the book doesn’t exactly hit the must-read cord. Trust me on this one though. It’s a best-seller for a reason. Ruth Reichl is a world-renowned food critic and former editor of Gourmet magazine.

With credentials like hers, you can bet her story will be a good one. From writing her first restaurant review for a major newspaper to dressing up in disguise to review restaurants, she reminds us to not judge a book by it’s cover.

That is an important lesson all of us business owners need to remind ourselves with from time to time. Bonus, she gives us some of her favorite recipes in the book to try for ourselves!

Scrappy Little Nobody- Anna Kendrick

Ok, we all know Anna Kendrick. She is a hilarious and talented actress with chops for the stage, our favorite movies and even cool hotel commercials. If you haven’t read her autobiography yet, you definitely should.

Detailing her childhood to her famedom today, she depicts the hard work it took to get there all the while being funny and relatable the entire time. No one becomes famous overnight and it takes struggle, dedication and hell-bending hope to get where we want to be. Anna tells us all about it.

When I don’t want to pick a pointedly “How To Succeed In Business and Life” esque type of book when I’m in a rut, I lean into my bookshelf to pick-up Scrappy Little Nobody instead. Same values and message, just funnier.
